IT WAS Luis’ strong leadership, community service and academic achievements that contributed to his selection as a Gates Millennium Scholar. When asked how he felt about the process of applying for the GMS, Luis said: “It is a really long process! I tried my hardest and put in all of my efforts,” says Cabrales. Out of the eight essays that needed to be submitted, one of his best was his personal statement. “I wanted to be seen as a whole person”, stated Luis. More than 23,000 students who applied for the GMS, making this year’s the largest and most competitive group of candidates in the program’s history.

Pickard Elementary School, 2301 West 2st in Pilsen. He is a successful STARS [Students Teaching And Reaching Students] Project member at Juarez, influenced by Yolanda Sanchez founder of STARS. “I was actually the one who came up with the name for STARS.” Cabrales joked. The STARS Project is a non-for-profit founded in Chicago in February 2010.
PURSUING A CAREER in the medical field stemmed from an experience when he was 6 years old; Luis found out that his mother was diagnosed with cancer. “At the time, I didn't understand what cancer was” Cabrales said. After graduating from Juarez in June, he will attend Illinois Wesleyan University as an undergraduate and transfer to UIC. His goal is to major in biology, pre-medicine and complete his PhD.
